Its early morning. You’re struggling to make it down the stairs without that first cup of coffee. The heavy downpour from the night before has seemed to subside and you feel a bit of sunshine is on its way. And then it happens. You step off that last step into ankle deep water… and there goes your morning.
Some have been lucky enough to survive the years without a clogged outside drain or their sump pump failing, but for those of us who have experienced such an event know the costs for remediation and repair can be astronomical. Remediation can run upwards of $3,000 on a 300 square foot room, depending on how long the water has been stagnant and the amount of damage done. It is recommended to have the remediation begin within the first 24 hours of the damage to mitigate any further damage. The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification has useful information and tips available on their website. Knowing you are adequately insured for such an event will provide some relief to the chaos formerly known as your DRY living space.
Water Back-Up and Sump Overflow coverage responds to claims resulting from water that backs up or overflows from a sewer or drain. This policy enhancement also covers the damage from water which overflows or is otherwise discharged from a sump, sump pump or related equipment, even if it results from mechanical breakdown of a sump pump or its related equipment.
This is not a standard coverage that is automatically included on every personal or commercial property policy. While certain policies may build in some coverage, there is usually a sub-limit applied that may not be adequate for the amount of damage done.
We recommend speaking with your insurance professional regarding this coverage, or give us a call. Our experienced agents here at Henry M. Murray Agency, Inc. will gladly review your coverage’s with you and help make sure you are properly insured.
