Ride sharing (Uber & Lyft) present some insurance issues to their drivers.
Uber has a policy that covers the driver/vehicle owner for liability and physical damage
while working for Uber AND while a passenger is in the car. Coverage is not offered
before the assigned passenger is actually picked up. In 2013 a San Francisco driver
logged in to Uber but with no passenger struck and killed a 6 year old girl and neither
the drivers coverage or Uber’s offered to cover the loss and lawsuits resulted.
Anyone thinking about driving for a ride sharing company should check with their insurance
company first. Don’t just ignore the situation because your insurance company hasn’t asked you
about it.
